Palma Majorca
The city
of Palma on the south coast is the capital of Majorca and its commercial
and cultural centre. Home to 600,000 residents Palma has also has a
huge amount to offer to holiday visitors, the bustling streets, wide
range of shops and excellent and varied night life make the city well
worth a day visit during your holiday even if you are not staying there.
The origins
of the city of Palma can be traced back to before Roman times, but is
mainly dominated by relatively new development from the 19th Century
onwards, but despite this still retains its old charm and character.
Palma is situated on a long sweeping bay but actually has no beach of
its own, the nearest being around 3 to 4 miles away at the resorts of
C'an Pastilla and Cala Mayor.
Evening
entertainment in Palma is lively without being too over the top, there
is a good selection of restaurants, busy bars and a few clubs. The Old
Town near the Cathedral is a maze of narrow streets, alleyways, spectacular
squares and old buildings.
During the day Palma has plenty to offer the holiday visitor; some of
the main tourist attractions are near to the city's port area and include
the Cathedral, the imposing 14th Century Castle of Bellver, the Royal
Palace and Palma's Stock Exchange.
